Before the introduction of electricity, one Thaddeus Hyatt came up with this idea in 1854; cast iron panels containing thick glass plugs. These panels could be laid in sidewalks allowing daylight to pass through to basements and other useable spaces below ground but still be strong enough to allow for pedestrians to walk above.
